In the midst of a picturesque island retreat, is this bold and graphic retreat by Inês Vieira da Silva and Miguel Vieira of SAMI arquitectos. Tempering the starkness of the home's monochromatic backdrop is an impressive collection of iconic mid-century modernism in warm woods and organic forms. Works include classics by Yngve Ekström, Hans Wegner, Alvar Aalto, and Arne Jacobsen.

This house aims to overlook the various views which can be seen from the highest point of the land.

Starting from a set of separate volumes and following the adaptation of the traditional architecture to the terrain, the resulting area between the four volumes was designed as a living space, the walls of which are a continuation of the exterior façades and where only glass separates the exterior from the interior space of the home.

Depending on the prevailing wind or the desired view, the house can open out on various landscapes and its connection and permeability with the exterior is total.

Marilyn Newhart recounts the story behind their giant Christmas card:

I had the bright idea to make a giant card for Christmas 1969. John was not noticeably enthusiastic but he went along with the idea, so I drew the Santa, cut some screens and John did the type. It took both of us to pull the squeegee because of the large amount of ink required for a poster of this size. That didn’t work very well, so I got behind John and held on to his belt while he gave a mighty pull. That made him even more unhappy. John rigged a clothesline to hang the wet sheets on. The fumes really built up after a bit so John opened the garage door, causing the sheets to blow into each other and get smudged. By this time he was openly hostile, and kept saying “Why didn’t you think of that?” We started with 150 sheets, a number that rapidly dwindled to our final edition of about 75. We were divorced at least six times during the process, which was normal for this type of project.

Freunde von Freunden takes us on a tour of art collectors Karen and Christain Boros incredible home, formerly a WWII bunker. Complimenting the art collection is an equally impressive collection of 20th Century design, including works by Florence Knoll, Warren Platner, the Eames, Oscar Neimeyer, Hans Wegner, Martin Eisler, Carlo Hauner, and many more.

In the Boros residence – a former Second World War air raid shelter built in 1942 in central Berlin – visitors can easily lose their way in the maze-like corridors of bare concrete. There, Christian and his wife, Karen, live with their son amidst paintings by Elizabeth Peyton and a series of installations by groundbreaking artists such as Olafur Eliasson. It is a dream home that once seemed impossible to realize, but has now become an art manifesto for Berlin’s historical Mitte district, where change is the norm. The mark of a good designer, or in fact any creative, is a strong, recognisable signature. Azzedine Alaïa has plenty: a monochrome palette, second-skin dresses, accentuated waists, laser-cut accessories. So it seems only right that the Tunisian designer who opened his first Parisian atelier in the 1970s, now turns his hand to interior design. As well as designing and producing four collections per year, and personal orders, Alaïa has overseen the conversion of a 300 sqm loft in a traditional 17th century building located in the Rue de Moussy of Marais district of Paris, into three exclusive suites. Better still, the building is located next to his boutique, atelier, showroom, warehouse and private dwelling – guests who stay will enjoy breakfast from Alaïa's private kitchen.

The apartments feature a wealth of 20th Century modernism, including works by Jean Prouve, Charlotte Perriand, Serge Mouille, Pierre Paulin, Harry Bertoia, Osvaldo Borsani, Kwok Hoi Chan, Arne Jacobsen, Sori Yanagi, Elenora Peduzzi-Riva and Gianfranco Frattini.

Classic Spaces: Frank Lloyd Wright: Kenneth Laurent House

This home and all its furnishings will be auctioned in Wright's Important Design sale.

In 1948 Kenneth Laurent commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to build a home that integrated his needs as a wheelchair-bound disabled veteran with Wright's signature open plan designs. Wright took the opportunity to develop an elliptical plan for the first time; the resulting soft curves, open floor plan and flowing space were utilized in later houses of the 1950s. The Laurents became friendly with Wright and traveled often to Talisen commissioning interior furnishings for the home and a later addition to the property. This beautifully maintained home is sold by the original owners. Originally custom-built furnishings by Frank Lloyd Wright are included in the sale.

Parisian architect Joseph Dirand is a very well known architect in Paris and throughout the world. During our visit, he reveals the poetry of natural materials to us and speaks about urban beauty, his inspirations and role models such as Joseph Beuys and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Joseph invites us to his apartment, his office space and the neighborhood he lives in.

His beautiful monochromatic home with touches of brass and color, serves as the backdrop to an incredible collection of Serge Mouille, Jean Prouve, and Charlotte Perriand, with a few small doses of Mies, Eames, and Bertoia. Such great taste, absolute perfection.

Rare early examples of Poul Kjaerholm's PK1 in bent steel and handwoven wicker, the first of Kjaerholm's designs to be produced by Ejvid Kold Christensen. These examples were crafted during the initial production series of 1956-1960.

Impressed to top rail: Denmark.

A fine pair of Charlotte Perriand's folded metal wall lamps with pivoting shades. Manufactured and retailed by Galerie Steph Simon.

Both examples signed with labels: SCE Made in France.

An impressive table lamp featuring lyrical brass detailing, perforated bias-cut cone shade, and articulated reflector.

From an unknown studio, with Arredoluce and Arteluce having both produced similar models.

A fine pair of minimalist single-drawer nightstands in the style of Harvey Probber, sheathed in walnut veneer and floating on legs of solid brass.

A rare and impressive pair of side tables sheathed in tessellated fossilized coral stone with inlaid brass detailing.

These tables are exceptional examples of a movement championed by Karl Springer and Maitland Smith in the 70s and 80s, rooted in Jean Michel Frank's philosophy of combining luxury materials and old world craftsmanship, with clean lined modernist forms.

Both signed with labels: MAITLAND SMITH.

Asahara Sigheaki's minimalist Palemar floor lamp, featuring a tripod base and articulated parabolic shade.

Signed with embossement: STILNOVO: MADE IN ITALY.

Joshua Vogel’s relationship with wood is nearly symbiotic. As a sculptor he listens to its sounds, knows the story of each piece intimately, and understands how different species behave. In the same way that a tree grows in layers of persistence and branches out unexpectedly, his path in life has never been obvious, but fueled by potential and rich with experience. “Wood is a living material, I don’t know many other things like that— that are so fundamental to our lives.”

Vogel recently founded Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Co. in Kingston, New York. His focus is on creating large-scale sculptural wood turnings from Walnut, Catalpa, Maple, and other hardwoods. “It’s something that excites me about turning; I love that it rides the line between art and craft. I don’t know where the line is, and my life’s work is trying to figure that out."

An incredible glass pavilion home by Thomas Phifer and Partners.

Just behind the copse stands a delicately transparent pavilion. Its light-filtering trellis—a horizontal tracery of slender aluminum rods extending the roof plane—aligns with the canopy of trees before it. Woven into the landscape, this is an architecture of subtlety, a precisely grounded yet quasi-weightless structure, an ethereal rectangle, planted between two existing woods. Like feathery fronds, the trellis reaches toward the bordering leafy branches, while the pavilion’s interior floor plane—fully visible through the glassy, Miesian shell—continues outward, its surface of ebonized bamboo transformed into an exterior plinth of Indian black granite, a walkway, finely striated with shadows from the diaphanous, metal canopy above.

More than a one-bedroom retreat for a former museum director and his wife, this is also a place of extraordinary 20th century paintings, sculptures, and glassware—much of it conveying a sense of buoyancy or levitation that echoes the pavilion’s lightness. The artwork always figures into view out, even if only peripherally. Conversely, from the gardens, this colorful indoor collection projects a presence outdoors.

In the animated interplay between landscape and art, in the shifting ambiguities between inside and out, the design achieves exceptional balance. An arcing swath of vibrant yellow sedum in the garden resonates with the golden footbridge in a Chinese screen inside; a mossy rock garden projects into the pavilion’s simple volume, while the bedroom nestles into a private apse of garden vegetation. You can look straight through the house without realizing it, but you could also mistake reflections of trees for glimpses through the pavilion. Morphing with the skies, flourishing seasonally, the dialogue evolves, nourishing the owner’s desire to live in the garden—with art.

Complimenting the interior is a choice selection of mid-century modernism, including works by Arne Jacobsen, George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi, Florence Knoll, Mies van der Rohe, and Frank Gehry.

A.J. Donahue was a 1942 Masters of Architecture graduate of Harvard University, under the tutelage of Marcel Breuer and Walter Gropius. He designed the Winnipeg Chair, during his tenure as Professor of Architecture at the University of Manitoba, producing each piece in his basement with the assistance of his students. There is much speculation that the Winnipeg Chair impressed a young George Mulhauser, so much so that it became the inspirational predecessor for Herman Miller's iconic Coconut Chair, which Mulhauser designed while working for George Nelson Associates.

Ole Wanscher teak settee and lounge chair, very rare model designed for Cado, featuring concave seat panels, sculpted armrests, and saber-flared legs. Elegant and refined, the lineage of this design can be traced to Wascher's earlier classically-influenced Colonial Chair for P. Jeppesen, and to the knock-down construction of his models for France & Son.

A fine and lyrical polished brass chandelier featuring 5 petal-shaped arms illuminating a central scultpure of brass flowers and leaves. Styled after a series of chandeliers designed by Paavo Tynell for both Taito Oy and Lightolier.

A pair of glamorous polished brass surrealist table lamps, featuring a sculpted organic palm motif. Reminiscent of the work of Serge Roche, Tommi Parzinger, and Maison Charles.

An impressive minimalist magazine rack from an unknown studio, featuring lacquered wood, chrome, and brushed brass. Signed with handpainted studio marks and dated Nov. 4 - 37.

From an article by Dina Broadhurst:

Built in 1956 in Caracas, Venezuela, Ponti envisioned the project from start to finish in an all-encompassing fashion, from the design of the furnishings and decorative objects, down to the articles of daily use.

Architecture and landscape were integrated using his modernist principles, and the exterior became as much a feature as the interior. The façade is alive, clad in white mosaic tiles appearing like a second skin, organic and at one with nature, while being referred to by Ponti as “sitting on the hill as gently as a large butterfly”.

The interiors were arranged to appear like a house with no walls, arriving behind the entrance to a flowing landscape with different ceiling heights and foldable walls, in which a giant mobile by Alexander Calder swings gently in the breeze.

Gio Ponti's Villa Arreaza, a.k.a. Diamond House. One of his finest private residences, and a masterpiece of 20th Century Modernism.

Fresh Finds: Pierre Paulin, Richard Nissen, + Italian Sommerso Glass

A very rare model from Richard Nissen's sculptural line of teak peppermills. This example features a fingerjointed box topped by a solid teak dial. Silver rings are inlayed on opposite sides of the box, and inside the silver rings are shallow concave holes.

The Nissen studio also produced some of Jens Quistgaard designs under contract from Dansk. Craftmanship and construction are equal between the two lines. Signed with embossed factory marks: NISSEN DENMARK and PAT. PEND.

A rare matching pair of Concorde lounge chairs, originally designed in 1966 for the Concorde departure lounge of JFK Airport.

These examples are the uncommon high-back model, featuring form-fitting seat panels on spring steel frames, providing exceptional comfort in seating.

A impressive and substantial Sommerso vase featuring layers of clear, amber and aubergine glass. Reminiscent of works by Flavio Poli for Archemede Seguso.

Behold the Miller House, completed in 1957 for industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller, and created by a holy trinity of 20th Century design masters: Eero Saarinen, Alexander Girard, and Dan Kiley. Featuring amazing custom furnishings by both Saarinen and Girard, including an illuminated Tulip dining table, and a modified Eames Sofa Compact in polished brass. Girard continued to worked as the home's interior designer for the next 15 years, modifying the interiors in accordance to the changing needs of the Miller family.

This is the ultimate modernist home.

A fine wall mirror with a frame of brushed brass, styled after a series of mirrors designed by Tommi Parzinger. Finished with a neo-classical ring finial, adding a touch of glamour to an otherwise minimalist design.

Approximately 18" x 28". Not signed, manufacturer not known.

Eames fiberglass Armshell Chairs by Herman Miller. Olive Green, a rich and organic standard production color introduced in the 1960s. Turquoise and Black, which were both limited to contract/special order only, and are among the rarest colors produced. All signed with embossed Herman Miller logos.
