Creative Spaces: 8 Great Workspaces

Judging from this photographic essay by rumID, Eames Design seems to be a staple in any great modernist workspace. My favorite vignette however, is the first, with the orange and ash Bodil Kjær desk, paired with a rolling desk chair by Fabricius + Kastholm, and finished with red Sunburst clock by George Nelson + Associates resting as sculpture on the tabletop.

Like some kind of sleek and heavenly robotic jellyfish, this custom installation of classic Artimide Tolemeo Lamps dangling from an original Victorian period architectural molding, is unlike any thing I've ever seen before.

From a studio by Barcelona based Agustí Costa.

You may not know the name, but his products have shaped modern society. Yoshiro Nakamatsu (whose inventions include the CD/DVD, floppy disk, taxi-cab meter and the karaoke machine) is arguably one of the greatest minds in human history. Quite a character and still actively developing products at 81, take a look into his fantastic world.

Creative Spaces: The Workspace of Artist Matte Stephens

Continuing our Creative Spaces series is the home/studio of artist Matte Stephens, recently featured on the Herman Miller blog. This small space is a shrine to the American Modern Movement, loaded with a museum worthy collection of furniture and graphic art.

"Do you feel that your working environment has any influence over your painting?

To me it’s the most important thing when working at home to have an inspiring workroom. I spend a lot of time in the room so I have tried to make it as inspiring and comfortable as possible. As you can see I love mid century design and I feel its one of my main influences. Being able to live with and work with good design makes everything more efficient and it’s just great stuff.

Creative Spaces: The Studio of Alvar Aalto

Apartment Therapy takes a look inside Alvar Aalto's design office, a nice follow up to the earlier feature on his home.

"Like his home, the Atelier facade is nearly windowless and quite plain. The majority of windows are on the rear and sides of the building where they can take full advantage of the limited (in winter) Finnish sunlight.

Upon entrance, the building is home to the office of the Alvar Aalto Foundation, the Alvar Aalto Academy and the Alvar Aalto Museum Architectural Heritage. The foundation maintains both the home at Riihitie 20 and this studio building. The majority of the space that is open for touring is the second floor office and meeting space.

The office include a large group drafting room, a small private conference room and a large studio space that was the private office Alvar Aalto."

The creative spaces of some leading figures of fashion, photographed by Maciek Kobielski and compiled by Bleed for Fashion. 20th century modern design icons are well represented, featuring lamps by Gae Aulenti, and chairs by Milo Baughman and Charles + Ray Eames. Emmanuelle Alt's vintage black leather Charles Pollack Executive Chair by Knoll looks especially chic. Respectively: Emmanuelle Alt, Alexander Wang, Natasha Ramsay, Christophe Decarnin, Vika Gazinskaya, and Hannah MacGibbon.
