Watch: Simon de Pury + Daphne Guinness: Collecting is a Wonderful Illness Pt. 1

. Monday, May 7, 2012

Auctioneer and art world impresario Simon de Pury sits down with friend and cultural patron Daphne Guinness to speak about connoisseurship and collecting in part one of a double-bill feature by filmmaker Johnnie Shand Kydd. Chairman and Chief Auctioneer of renowned auction house Phillips de Pury & Company, De Pury is often referred to as “the Mick Jagger of the auction world,” due to his lively auctioning style. Fluent in English, French, German and Italian, the Swiss-born dealer also owns an important private collection of contemporary art, acquired over several decades spent with gavel in hand. “Simon is obviously a grand seducer, and there was this wonderful element of flirtation going on,” says Shand Kydd of the tète-à-tète, “You can't fake that kind of chemistry."

Watch: Josh Vogel by The Scout

A beautiful short film by The Scout, about woodworker Josh Vogel and his passion for his craft.

From an interview with Sarah Williams:

Joshua Vogel’s relationship with wood is nearly symbiotic. As a sculptor he listens to its sounds, knows the story of each piece intimately, and understands how different species behave. In the same way that a tree grows in layers of persistence and branches out unexpectedly, his path in life has never been obvious, but fueled by potential and rich with experience. “Wood is a living material, I don’t know many other things like that— that are so fundamental to our lives.”

Vogel recently founded Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Co. in Kingston, New York. His focus is on creating large-scale sculptural wood turnings from Walnut, Catalpa, Maple, and other hardwoods. “It’s something that excites me about turning; I love that it rides the line between art and craft. I don’t know where the line is, and my life’s work is trying to figure that out."

Lanvin injects some much needed levity into the fashion world, and the result is quite refreshing. And yes, that is indeed Alber Elbaz.

Lanvin's Steven Meisel-shot fall/winter 2011 campaign images of Karen Elson and Raquel Zimmermann dancing were slightly confusing when they were first released... but everything makes sense now that the Paris label has released a campy video to accompany the print ads.   Models Karen Elson, Raquel Zimmermann, Lowell Tautchin and Milo Spijker dance to Pitbull's 2009 smash hit "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" wearing select pieces from Lanvin's fall/winter 2011 collection in this super cute video. Choreographed moves, serious model faces and some ultra-glam Lanvin designs.

"Sleeping Beauty" marks the directorial debut of Sydney novelist Julia Leigh and if the calibre of her endorsements or the strength of this trailer are any indication, you'll be hearing a whole lot more about this film as the year progresses.

Synopsis: Lucy is a young university student who takes a job as a Sleeping Beauty. In the Sleeping Beauty Chamber old men seek an erotic experience that requires Lucy’s absolute submission. This unsettling task starts to bleed into Lucy’s daily life and she develops an increasing need to know what happens to her when she is asleep.
