Another anthem from my youth, and 25 years later and I still find myself quite enthralled with this mysterious dancing girl in red.
This was actually an unauthorized music video created by Sire Records to promote the song. Cutting together clips of live performances, an urban industrial landscape, and a dancing model (whose identity remains secret to this day). The band hated the video. In a 1985 interview with Creem Magazine, Morrisey remembers telling Sire "'You can't possibly release this... this degrading video.' And they said, 'Well, maybe you shouldn't really be on our label.' It was quite disastrous". Sometimes labels know best, as the video is widely credited for their American and college radio success.
