Listen: Homeless Man covers RadioHead

. Thursday, December 17, 2009

"This tear-jerking video comes courtesy of the Opie and Anthony Show on SiriusXM radio. The footage was shot after the show's producers enlisted a homeless man, Daniel Mustard, to voice over a promo then found out he could sing. Here Mustard does an acoustic version of Radiohead's Creep with a slightly different take on the vocal phrasing and years and years of pathos in the delivery."

WOW! I would go to his gigs! He is a golden voice.

Anonymous said...

great rustic voice, got a lot of emotion in it, so much tallent lyin out and forgotten down dark alleys.

Unknown said...

amazing music, don't think anyone would deny that, but judging by the watch and the hat, I'm not so sure if he's homeless anymore. He certainly shouldn't be seeing as he can sing like that.

Anonymous said...

that guy aint homeless

Anonymous said...

Dude really he needs a contract thats raw talent

Anonymous said...

This man.. He takes the original song and turns it from something that tries too hard to be depressing into something that naturally conveys the soul of the song. I would buy his album. And I dont really buy albums anymore.

Anonymous said...

Homeless people do not have clean coat, clean hat, clean beard, etc. Sorry. You've been had...but I would like to meet his agent.

thronesforcrowns said...

holy shit.

thats amazing. such a good voice for the song, really conveys the emotion of the song

Anonymous said...

really like it... but how'd a homeless guy get a taylor?

Anonymous said...

Every one who says hes not homeless is pretty naive and probably never lived in a big city. I see homeless people everyday just like him who pan handle enough change to eat and sleep in doorways in a sleeping bag surrounded by all there possession. A watch and a hat do not reflect a house or means of obtaining those things.

Anonymous said...

that was freakin' great!

Anonymous said...

If he is homeless its probably because he is playing a Taylor. If that's his guitar that's insane.

Anonymous said...

Hey having a great voice does not equal to become a musician. There's a bunch of other stuff you've got to have, like creativity, songwriting abilities, charisma, etc. There's A LOT of ppl out there with great singing voices that doesn't mean that they all deserve a contract. There is a difference between singing a song nicely and actually creating it and singing it. Of course, there's also a lot of ppl who can write great songs but can't sing it right...

Anonymous said...

Doesn't matter were he lives folks... This guy is a great singer anyway.

JF said...

Why "homeless"? A guy cannot use a freaking beard?

You don't belong there, man.

Anonymous said...

awesome voice

Anonymous said...

It's not his guitar, they had it in studio for the homeless talent show O&A did.

Unknown said...

@Anonymous... If you have hate in you heart, let it out...

So to clarify playing an instrument and sing whilst doing it, does not mean you are a musician? Only if you write the song too? Obliviously no professional musicians employ song writers....

And most homeless men don't rock $3000 guitars...

Anonymous said...

Awesome! I would buy his album too! It is also sad that his life has come to- with a talent like that!

Anonymous said...

Yeah, he don't look homeless, dressed better than lots of musicians I know. I think they got carried away because he has a bushy beard, it seems to mean homeless to lots of people. When it mostly just means you don't like shaving ! I'm guessing if he was clean cut average guy his voice may not seem so special, not that he is bad. My favourite homeless singer is the guy from the Tom Waits album that sings 'Jesus Blood' that is genuine.

Anonymous said...

Holy Pluto!! Awesome vid

switch-smith said...

Just for some clarity: the Taylor guitar is apparently from the studio, and not owned by Daniel Mustard.

Unknown said...

love it sounds a little like dave van ronk

Anonymous said...

am i the asshole thats not really impressed? im glad ol musty got to have his 15, and be warm and fed for a day, but it was mediocre. ive heard plenty of street performers that are infinitely more captivating. nice enough voice, years of whisky and cigs have laid a nice patina.

Anonymous said...

and you thought he wasn't original

Anonymous said...

Another website explains that this is not his guitar -- he couldn't afford to own one. They fetched it for him while he was in the studio.

Anonymous said...

Priceless

dude, it goes to show, we have great talent out in the streets, were they wander around all day, begging for food, yet we have dumb ass, no talent justin bieber who just is a good looking kid who hasnt hit puberty yet

This was... interesting. Not really my style, I prefer the original.

Wow. This man's voice is so filled with emotion. I would pay to go to a show of his. Brilliant!

Anonymous said...

i love you lora feldmen

Anonymous said...

unless they dry cleaned his clothes and gave him a shower before taping this, this dude isn't homeless. or he found a place to sleep next to a washer/dryer.

Anonymous said...

there's a big difference between being homeless and being a complete bum, i buy it and the guys pretty decent, lot of emotion into the song

Mon said...

Honestly, they probably cleaned him up and gave him a nice guitar...

Christine said...

amazing. raw. talent.

Rumble_Line said...

He's special alright, I love it. Also: homeless doesn't equal dirty bum.

Unknown said...

Yes, Mustard is homeless. He was picked up by a cop friend of the show for Opie and Anthony's Homeless Shopping Spree. He's a raging alcoholic, and the guitar belongs to Sirius/XM. They let him use it for this segment.

Anonymous said...

Truly powerful. Really adds a whole different level to the song. I wish this man well and I hope the streets don't consume him like so many others.

Anonymous said...

The new Tom Waits??

Anonymous said...

He's pretty good, but a homeless man with a Taylor?

Anonymous said...

The guy is playing a guitar that's worth close to a grand, he's def not homeless.

Anonymous said...

It is possible that they bought him clothes or something before this

switch-smith said...

Again for some clarity: the Taylor guitar is from the studio, and not owned by Daniel Mustard.

Anonymous said...

Simply Brilliant. I'd buy it.

Anonymous said...

totally agree. If he records, i'll buy it.

I know someone who 2 years ago was living in a 300,000$+ home, and is now living out of their SUV.

Not everyone who is a homeless is a toothless crack head pushing a shopping cart down the street.

I think its pretty obvious, to those of us who have LIVED life a bit, that this man is living on the streets.

And yes, they prolly did clean him up a bit before they filmed him.

Not that far fetched to consider this man might have got to wash his hands and face before being taped.

regardless, this is one of the best covers I have head of this song

Anonymous said...

Wow. This dude is amazing. Get him off the streets! I wish more people would take the time to appreciate small people. Just like that world-renowned violinist playing in a subway station, where about six people paid any attention to him, and the next night he performed a grand concert for hundreds of people. Sad sad.

shere said...

Wow!

HE is so fucking special

ryanxavierlane said...

Well, my take on it is that just because he has a beautiful guitar does not mean he is not homeless. I know just because I struggled to find a place to rest my head at night doesn't mean I would sell my means of expression to afford a hotel for a few nights. :/

Anonymous said...

honestly - are people still commenting about how he can't be homeless because of the guitar, because they want to show off they can trainspot a taylor? what the hell people, please get over yourselves.

also, travis hit the nail on the head. if they wanted to i'm sure they could have stereotyped him up a bit for you all, with a dirty face and an outfit made of old dish rags, but maybe they chose to film him with a sense of self-worth?

Unknown said...

It was not good, you people have so low standards.

switch-smith said...

Again for the third time:

The Taylor guitar is from the studio, and not owned by Daniel Mustard.

Anonymous said...

amazing voice, great cover. to those who have been saying that he's not homeless... Homeless means that you dont have a home. many homeless people have possesions, for example his watch, coat and hat. these are probably his prize possesions, which he takes with him everywhere. just because he doesnt have a home doesnt mean that he doesnt have a few possesions, maybe valuable, that mean alot to him...

It doesn't say he's not homeless, it says he's a street performer. You can be both, you just need a piece of paper that allows it.
Either way it doesn't matter, he's amazingly talented.

amandrynorange said...

just smoke a pack a day and sleep outside every night and you can have a voice like that too!

Anonymous said...

not all homeless people are dirty.... some live in shelters... homeless, means that you don't have a permanent home, you can buy a watch before you can buy a home..... he very well could be homeless, just not addicted to drugs and alcohol, keeping it clean

Anonymous said...

Everyone who says he's not homeless are idiots. Open another tab and check for yourselves-stop trying to sound cool. Going against the grain is so 90's! Oh yeah, this guys great-check him out singing 'boys don't cry'.

Anonymous said...

Well, he's got to have some kind of musical creativity, those most definitely aren't the original chords. He's switched the key up a bit.

Anonymous said...

the performance doesn't grab my attention as much as the stupidity of some of these comments...I'll give the benefit of the doubt and guess that most of U still live with your parents..... leaching off them or a girl/boyfriend,hmmm? having no understanding of economics and what it takes to survive.Homeless comes in all shapes and sizes and does not discriminate...once upon a time i was on the street, living out of my truck...making around $100 a day as a carpenter...4 two yrs i could never get into a home/apt...Hell,i could of owned a dozen of those guitars mustard was playing, nice clothes,etc....finding AFFORDABLE shelter and trying to keep it?? Very difficult these days....To say the least.....Man,with moronic comments like that,i'm starting to lose faith in americans...LOL...

I'm not sure a homeless guy could afford a $2300 Taylor Guitar.

There is a difference between having nice clothes and having a house man.

There's homeless folks with cars and jobs. Some of these guys just don't have the mental capacity to maintain a living space - so they do normal things, but take showers and sleep at the shelter - which they pay for. Some of the guys who panhandle pull down 50 bucks an hour. Some guys simply decide that having a mortgage and rent ain't for them. There are infinite reasons and situations when it comes to bein homeless. Having the dignity to keep you and your clothes clean does NOT mean you aren't down on your luck.

Don't jump to conclusions when you don't know what you're talking about.

Seriously, since when was there a homeless uniform? In my 20+ years on and off the streets I didn't know I was supposed to "look homeless". You people need to re-evaluate your stereotypes and think about what a judgemental a@@hole looks like. Looks familiar doesn't it. F@ckin' like it because it's a man expressing himself no matter his instrument, clothes, etc...

mojination said...

Support publicly funded programs both abroad and locally.

Everyone keeps saying that 'he shouldn't be homeless if he can sing'. Since when does singing pay you money? Half the people with contracts don't sing well. I sing in the shower and no one pays me money and I'm sure I have more talent than half the people they throw on tv/radio.

If you want to keep artists off the streets and actually have some culture in America support local music/art.

sir jorge said...

not half bad

Anonymous said...

Not half good either.

Anonymous said...

You can get a shower and clean your clothes up at some shelters and some gas stations (truckers do that) and he can carry a tune, but voice wise...not that wonderful.

Anonymous said...

you guys are all just being nice because he's homeless. yay for you, you're such a bleeding heart. i guarantee if you hadn't known this guy was a hobo you wouldn't have said he was that great

Rijor said...

To those who cry "You've been duped" to this, I suggest you read up on the O&A show (Wikipedia works wonders). They've had LOTS of experiences with the homeless, including something known as the Homeless Shopping Spree, where "a dozen of New York's homeless [are] each given several hundred dollars by the show and much more by the fans". Anthony is also a germophobe, and thus has been known to offer showers and laundry cleaning for them.

All of this I learned in 10 minutes of reading.

And as for the video, heck yes he needs to do some recording. That's an EXCELLENT cover.

The man has some awesome talent. Amazing. I hope because of this he will no longer be homeless. And to those debating if he is indeed homeless or not.. like wow... seriously, life is way to short... and a little kindness goes a long way... Peace N Love.

Anonymous said...

Oh my God...that was amazing. I have listened to it three times already.

The ONLY time I go out and actually buy an Album is if they REALLY impress me (I have only bought two in the last two years) and Mustard impressed me.

Beautiful...

Anonymous said...

Hey now. Granted i am no longer homeless but, he could very well be. If you are resourceful enough you can get your close cleaned, a shower and a place to crash occasionally. And heck yes he can sing, get the man a freaking contract. I want to hear more.

Anonymous said...

For a second I think his body took the form of a unicorn.

Anonymous said...

let me just clarify for anyone who doesnt understand anything about music/studios/living as a homeless person.

This man is very obviously a musician. The skill it takes to keep a steady strumming pattern is way out of the coordination levels of most everyone out there. a lot of people can do it, but MOST people couldnt do it to save their souls.

Secondly studios that play music? You seriously dont think they would have a guitar laying around? And if you read the description it explains that they had invited him to come in to play. They were expecting it, so if they didnt have a guitar laying around they probably brought one in.

Lastly, not all homeless people have long scraggly dirty hair with no teeth and talk to themselves. Many of them are just like you and me. a little rough around the edges, but normal socially none the less. And times are hard now in case you didnt notice.

Austin said...

Wasn't Bad.. But wasn't very good.

Anonymous said...

If that guy's hooded sweatshirt and driving cap (widely available at your friendly neighborhood Salvation Army store) are better than your clothes just because they are clean, perhaps you should reconsider your personal hygiene regimen. Also, it's a POS watch. Seriously, get over yourselves. What are you going to say next, "photoshopped"?

All of you saying that this guy couldn't be homeless - have you ever seen actual homeless people? And have you ever been to a Salvation Army or Goodwill? It's not that hard to panhandle your way to some decent looking clothes, morons.

Anonymous said...

simply amazing. this guy (assumingly) has no professional vocal training sessions other the playing music for people on the streets. just like many of the greatest rock artisits of all timee. the raspiness to his voice adds so much to the showing of what his character is, its similar to 50 cent's voice after being shot in the mouth. his voice has such uniquness and obvious pain in it. i applaud you musturd, and i can not express how much i hope you get your self a deal. or at the very least maybe some gigs at local bars or something.

Anonymous said...

Spine-tingling and haunting. I loved that, he made the song his own. I'm so glad the studio lent him that guitar and let the world hear him sing, he was great.

Anonymous said...

For those who say he is not really a bum...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dS4jrF8Qe4

Unknown said...

Goodness. Lots of people want to argue whether he's homeless or not. B*tchin about his hat or his guitar. Doesn't matter. Look into his eyes, man. He's in another world and you know it.

CleanOldBum said...

I think he is legit. Look at his right wrist. Those are the kind of bracelets you get in some kind of institution. Maybe jail. Maybe a (psych) hospital. Either way, he may have just had access to a hot shower and maybe some nice nurse/guard decided to run his clothes through the wash. Also, just because you're playin' it don't make it your guitar.

I enjoyed it, and I'd like to hear any of his originals.

TheGiant said...

Anyone who sits there and thinks this guy isn't homeless because of his "clean jacket" or "clean hat" or beard, you would be really surprised, I have homeless friends, one is temporarily living with me, the other is in a program at a shelter, they do not "look" homeless by any means. My one friend's jacket is "clean" because it came from a donation at a charity thrift shop.

Unknown said...

you don't have to immense amounts of creativity or song-writing ability to make it in the music industry today.
have you ever looked at the fine print inside a CD cover? typically, out of the 14 songs, 3 are actually written by the artist. they have people write their stuff for them a majority of the time..

regardless, love this guys voice and cover of this song. God doesn't care about your social status when he gives you gifts like this..

What is the problem with the people that can't show one lick of compassion for another person? Have you been so suppressed by parents or other people that you have nothing to give to another or is it that you are so unbelievably selfish that you are blinded that you too are just flesh. The man is a person who obviously has a talent that many other do not in this world. We are only as good a people as the weakest amongst us. I'd hope that we could find the best in each of us and for those that need a hand we reach out and help them to the next level. For those that don't believe in this I will continue to hold out hope for you to change. For the rest I'd buy his album as well.

Look, I was homeless for nearly a year, and you never would have known if you didn't already know. I was clean. I had clothes. I even shaved my face! and believe it or not, I didn't have arguments with myself walking down the street! I just couldn't afford to make rent every month. Plain and simple. It really wasn't so bad. After a couple months you find ways to not let it get you down. You guys need to get a dose of the real world. It's not all flowers and sausages. This guy is fantastic, though. Whether it's your cup of tea or not, dude's got a really unique voice, and he can wail. I'd go to his show.

Seriously... read the article... he was picked for doing a voice over on television... I doubt that they said to him "come do this for nothing"

Just because he has been dolled up for promotion doesn't mean that he wasn't on the streets.... *rolls her eyes*

There is a man with a beautiful voice that I see regularly downtown who uses his guitar as a microphone.

And to the person who was saying that a musician has to write their own music... how many orchestral performers write their own music... hell how many of the popular artists around these days write their own music? Composing and playing and singing are separate talents that sometimes are combined. =P

well, that made me cry... And homeless or not, I still think he's amazing! I haven't heard anything like his voice before!

To the people that think he's a fake;
They probably gave him new-ish looking clothes and a new guitar. Theres no such thing as unedited talent on tv.. x)

I just want to start out saying... I fucking hate Radiohead, and especially hate that song.

However, this is probably one of the most beautiful performances I have ever seen.

This is from the Amos and Andy show. The man IS homeless. They gave him the new clothes and cleaned him up. He mentioned he played guitar so they grabbed the one they had laying around and asked him to play a song and this is what came of the whole thing.
He has some talent for sure. But his voice is pretty shot if you ask me. Its not good enough for me to be stumbling upon it 6 times a day.

power to you!

actually, many homeless people make up to 50,000 dollars on the streets begging for money, so he could quite possibly be still homeless and still have a watch, plus that could be an old watch from years before he was homeless. what he wears does not mean he isn't homeless.

It's called the thrift store, people. cheap and clean clothes come from there.

they probably gave him the taylor to play the song

THIS GUY JUST ROCKED MY FREAKIN SOCKS OFF he deserves more then what life has givin him

Jesus. I think this is perfect example of "stage presence"...even if he is/isn't a homeless man, just taking it from the perspective of such makes it that much more melancholy. He's got a beautiful voice, too.

You guys are ignorant of homelessness. Trust me, I've been homeless. You can have clean clothes, and OMG you can even have POSSESSIONS :O and still be homeless.

Just because he doesn't have a house doesn't mean he doesn't have a way to wash his clothes, himself, or that he can't have a watch.

Seriously people - stop being so narrowminded.

That said, this guy is amazing. I would totally love to hear more from him.

Seriously? Stop raggin on him yall. You can look somewhat nice and still be homeless with today's standards. In addition, TV shows have this thing called wardrobe and makeup. If they had put him on television looking "homeless", everyone would have been talkin bad sayin that they were inhumane. Besides, they had him work for them before. And most people buy things and make themselves better looking when they get money. It takes common sense to figure this out. Please use it. I know not all yall are this ignorant.

Ok people. Just because hes homeless and can (kind of) sing doesnt mean he deserves any sort of contract or deal. Honestly...hes not good. Whats really happening here is that you people feel so sorry for him like hes a lost cat or something. Sorry to be on the negative side of this whole thing but I just cant stand people who comment on the internet. On a lighter note I enjoyed watching the video.
